The
music video for The Shoes song, time to dance,
demonstrates genre characteristics. The Shoes are an electronic band
that create dance music. The music video features scenes where it demonstrates
genre characteristics. These scenes include a night club scene which has a
elongated beeping sound that features for a number of seconds, trying to
emulate what is going through the head of the killer In the night club, it also
has an opening scene of a young couple dancing around their friend before he
murders them and also strobe lighting. In scenes where the killer is casing
down victims or is about to kill someone, the editing quickens which is genre
specific as flashing editing and fast paced editing represents the intensity of
dance music. The video also shows a
relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. For example in the middle of
the song, the killer is walking through a night club in slow motion with a
still facial expression which indicates the current mood/emotions of the
killer. The Shoes are not a recognisable brand but the actor, Jake Gyllenhaal
is. It is perhaps evident that the record label has stepped in and demanded
that they find a more recognisable start to feature in the music videos as more
fans are likely to look and share it increasing the profit margins. The music video features a number of
intertextual references. In particular, references to the movie American
Psycho. For example there is a mid shit of Jake haking away at a person, which is similar to
what Christian bales character does in the movie. This video is a story based
narrative as it follows the journey of a serial killer in a non linear format.
The music video for the song Control,
written and performed by chase and status ft. The slaves demonstrates genre
characteristics. The abundant use of fast paced editing suits the electronic
music that the band creates. The music video doesn’t have a direct relationship
between the lyrics and the visuals as the video more expresses the lyrics threw
the performance based video. The intensity and
aggression that is being performed about is emphasised between the hostility
between rioters and police. The demands of the record label will include the
need of lots of close ups of the artist. This is to focus the audience on the
main star and promote their image.
The turn down for what music video
performed by DJ Snake and Lil John demonstrates genre specific characteristics.
The intense uncontrollable dancing is representative of the rave/party song
that it is. It also features an increasing number of people dancing together
further representing the dance genre of music as its often performed either
together or item company. The relationship between lyrics and visuals is
present within the music video. The
words “turn down for what” are a rebellious term questioning authority and
instruction. This is represents threw the over the top erratic behaviour of the
people featured in the music video and their not caring for the environment and
people around them. also the fact that on each chorus, they break down a floor
literally represents the word down in the song. Furthermore, there is a big
relationship between the music and the visuals. The most noticeable one being
as there is a build up to the drop of the chorus, the people begin to lose
control and then when the beat drops there is a lot of destruction caused
connoting the crazy and passionate/over the top “dancing” associated with dance
music. The is quite a bit of sexual referencing in the video which most
definitely have either raised eyebrows and brought attention to the video,
which may have been a demand from the record label in order to promote the song
more.
